Abstract: Learning can be deep, strategic or surface. All professionals learn for a
purpose. It can therefore be argued that they have a deep learning experience.
This paper reports preliminary findings in the process of investigating the
question of whether professional accountancy trainees experience deep learning during
their qualifying years. If not, where does the blame lie the syllabus
designers, the examiners, the tutors, the providers of learning material, the trainees
themselves or somewhere else? What are the consequences of the type of learning
experienced? The paper looks at innovations in medical education syllabus material
and draws parallels with existing professional accountancy syllabus material and show what
accountancy syllabus designers can learn from their medical counterparts.
